Banaue Rice Terraces Travel Guide

Hi there! 👋 I'm Benj and welcome to another Philippines Travel Guide where I share budget-friendly guides on how to visit all 82 provinces of the Philippines!

In this guide, we will be exploring Banaue Rice Terraces in the province of Ifugao!

Summary

I explored in Banaue for 4 days to rest and brainstorm but I'll be sharing the itinerary as a tourist.

Some trivias about Banaue Rice Terraces:

🛖 Batad Rice Terraces within Banaue is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995

💪 Built by hand and without modern machinery more than 2,000 years ago

💦 The rice terraces have a natural irrigation system

🤝 The current locals inherited the rice fields from their ancestors

🌾 The harvested rice is only for the consumption of the village

🦺 Because of the resistance to foreign influence and lack of vehicle accessibility, they were able to preserve most of its traditions and maintain their simple ways of life.

Best time to go:

🟢 Apr to May - Greenest

🟡 Jun to Jul - Planting season

🟡 Aug to Nov - After planting season

🟤 Dec to Mar - Coldest time and muddy

How To Get There?

Note that there's only 1 to 2 trips daily and it gets filled fast so make sure to book in advance to secure your slots.

I only paid P1,944 with my discount code below for a Super Deluxe or overnight sleeper bus from P2,040.

I highly recommend this bus with comfortable chairs and comfort room for the 8-hour bus ride and you're well rested for the hike.

1. Go to Coda Lines Cubao Terminal

Use Grab, InDrive, Green GSM, MoveIt, Angkas, or Joyride to get there.

2. Check-in and Board the Bus

Very comfortable recliner chairs and onboard comfort room.

Bus Stop

First stop after 4 hours:

📍 Ryan John Restaurant and Pasalubong Center

Eatery

- All rice meals are only P120.

- I tried their pork sisig. I was surprised with the taste in a good way.

- The pork was roasted which resulted to a combined taste of sisig and pork barbeque.

Pasalubong

Jams, local sweeets, and handicrafts.

Baguio broom and thrift store.

My favorite is macapuno for P40. It's a coconut candy with milk.

Second stop after 2 hours:

📍 Traveller's Food Hub

In case you slept through the first stop.

Day 1: Batad Rice Terraces

✍️ Register at Tourism Office

The bus will stop right in front of the tourism office.

Witness the sunrise.

There are history trivias and map of Banaue at the mini garden beside the entrance.

Register and pay the tourism fee of P50.

Don't forget to claim the complimentary brewed coffee and water. Unlimited coffee refills if there are only a few tourists.

Important Note:

If you arrive early, the guides would recommend you to wait for the sunrise before starting the tour for better views of the rice terraces.

If you travel on a weekday, better if you eat breakfast at the stores beside the tourism office first because most establishments open late. They only open early during weekends and holidays where there are a lot of tourists.

I was planning to eat breakfast at Psalm's Cafe, a cafe I loved during my previous visit. And the guide was right, it was still closed.

☕️ Breakfast

I ordered chicken curry, rice, and black coffee for P150.

🛵 Start of Tour

To avoid getting scammed, agree on prices at the tourism office.

Tricycle to Batad costs P1,000. That's good for 1 to 3 persons.

- Buy water and snacks

- Prices in Batad are 200% to 500% higher.

- I bought a 7-liter bottle for only P95. It costs around P300 in Batad based from fellow tourists I met there.

Guihob View Point

The Batad Saddle Point and the last stop of all vehicles.

🚶 Hike to Batad

To preserve most of its traditions and maintain their simple ways of life, Batad still resists foreign influence and vehicle accessibility.

Day 2: Banaue View Points

🌾 Chango View Point

The first and my favorite view deck of the tour

Where you can see the terraces printed on the twenty peso bill.

Houses and establishments on the cliff

You can also see the hut that inspired Thanos' retirement home in Avengers

Hear the relaxing sound of the river

You can see Dianara View Point from here. This is the next view point of the tour.

🌾 Zoe's Cafe and View Point

Right beside Chango View Point is a cafe with its own view point from the balcony.

It was still closed during my visit but the guide knows the owner and opened the view deck for me.

🌾 Dianara View Point

This is where Psalm's Cafe is located.

The cafe with the view of Banaue Rice Terraces.

🌾 Main View Point

- The highest view point in Banaue

- It's my least favorite though. There's nothing special compared to Chango View Point and Dianara View Point

🌾 Town Proper

One of the most beautiful town propers in the Philippines
